The Festival of the Aubergines – Battir Village
Battir village, which is located to the south-east of Bethlehem, is famous for its aubergines. An annual festival is held in the village in October. The short-lived season of Battir aubergines makes them a much-sought-after delicacy. Their narrow oblong shape makes them ideal for stuffing. During the festival many exhibitions are held: an exhibition of the traditional embroidery and knitting of Battir and the surrounding areas, a local heritage exhibition of agricultural tools, an exhibition of aubergines and other vegetables, and an exhibition of homemade aubergine products mainly a variety of pickled aubergines. Also included in the festival are a number of cultural events such as folk wedding songsand dances.
