The Dome of The Chain - Al-Masjid al-Aqsa

The Dome of The Chain

The Chain Dome is located on the eastern side of the Dome of the Rock Mosque. It was ordered to be built by the Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, and it is believed to be a miniature model of the Dome of the Rock Mosque. The structure is hexagonal and supported by six columns, surrounded by an eleven-sided corridor of arches supported by eleven columns. It features a mihrab on the southern side. The dome has undergone several restorations, including work by the Mamluk Sultan al-Zahir Baybars and most recently by the Al-Aqsa Mosque Reconstruction Committee, which covered its dome with lead sheets in 1996.
